Black Tap (Meatpacking Location)

248 West 14th Street
(between Seventh and Eighth Avenues)

I have wanted to go to Black Tap since January for one of their famous milkshakes.

I thought the perfect time to go was when a friend from out of state came to visit.

Even though I showed up a half hour before the restaurant opened for lunch (as I had heard that the wait to get in was notoriously long), there already was a line—behind a velvet rope. My friend initially thought the velvet rope was to enter a club, not the restaurant, so she walked right by it.

Since we had gotten on line early, when the doors opened we were seated rather quickly at the bar. The hostess paces the number of customers that enter, so you might have better luck with a party of two as opposed to a larger party.

I normally would prefer to sit at a table as opposed to a bar, but the bartender was friendly, helpful, and super organized with managing all the various customers’ needs and questions at the bar.

The menu is rather limited. The must-tries are a burger and, of course, one of the signature milkshakes.

I ordered the Spicy Mexican burger ($14), which is a chorizo burger with jack cheese and chipotle mayo. It comes with a side of Idaho fries, sweet potato fries, or onion rings. I chose their homemade onion rings with a truffle aioli dipping sauce.

It was spicy, but good! And that truffle aioli sauce was delicious. I could really smell and taste the truffle.

My friend ordered The Mexico City ($17), which is a burger with pepper jack cheese, jalapeno, chipotle mayo, and a crispy onion ring.

She ate every bit of food on her plate!

So much so, she barely had any room left for dessert.

The main attraction, though,, had to be the milkshake. We ordered The Cookie Shake ($15) to share. It’s a vanilla shake that has a vanilla-frosted rim with cookie crumbles topped with a “cookiewich,” crumbled cookies, chocolate chips, whipped cream, and chocolate drizzle.

And, yes, your eyes are not deceiving you. There is an ice cream cookie sandwich in the shake!

The milkshake was delicious and would definitely satisfy an ice cream craving! And it was more than enough for two. After our burgers, we couldn’t even finish it.

Would definitely return, as it’s a fun place to take out-of-towners.

Pros:
Yummy milkshake!

Cons:
The line to get into restaurant.

Final Thoughts
Come hungry!
